The main objective of this kitchen is to create a space conducive to entertaining, while accommodating multiple cooks in the kitchen at once.
1. By sectioning off the kitchen into work zones, we were able to maximize efficiency in a larger space; accommodating more cooks and their guests simultaneously. In this kitchen, appliances and fixtures are grouped according to task/use; beverage storage, serving, prep, cooking, baking, cleaning, etc.
2. An open kitchen without closed corners and an island helps family and guests easily circulate around minimizing traffic jams. Optimizing the layout with a large L-shaped island was an essential part of this kitchen. By following the kitchen’s natural L-shape, the island creates a natural division between guests and chef while also keeping conversation flowing.
3. Elevating the counter seating to bar height provides a clear counter for guests to park themselves and have a drink while the chef preps. The varied height also creates visual interest, and sneakily hides kitchen mess from the main living area.
4. Multiple sinks are a must for entertaining in a large household. With this configuration of sinks, several sous-chefs can assist the cook all around the great big island using the sinks as needed and sharing in the fun of cooking together. The larger main sink is framed by a trash pull-out and dishwasher, streamlining clean-up. The second smaller sink is more for handwashing and food prep, and allows the cook to converse with guests around the island.
The style profile is a spiced up contemporary that doesn’t take itself to seriously. The clients really loved the idea of modern and cool grey tones, but didn’t want to miss out on the warmth and character of a more traditional kitchen.
A two-toned kitchen fits the bill, as the space was large enough to accommodate the dual toned cabinetry without overwhelming the space. Quartz countertops echo the two-toned cabinets in inverse coloring to the cabinetry. The client picked out a mosaic backsplash that enthusiastically ties the two colors together.
